History of the Germans Podcast
KeymasterWelcome to 2025 – let me know what you hope to get from the podcast this year

ParticipantI found the podcasts about the general empire to be really interesting, the in depth history of the Hussite rebellions is fascinating and I’m loving every episode. But if we could dive back into what was happening in the empire for context would be nice.
Like what were the Hapsburgs up to, what was happening in Flanders and north western Germany, episode 179 was brilliant and I don’t want to seem like there is any complaint in my end. Please keep up the great work!

KeymasterNo worries – we are on our way back!. There may be two more episodes in this season. Then I am considering two options:
One is to go straight to the rise of the Habsburgs.
The other is to do a little tour of the empire, have an episode about each prince electors and then one each about the Houses of Hesse, Baden, Württemberg, Oldenburg and Pomerania who we have not yet talked about. There are epsiodes about the Wittelsbachs, Wettins, Welf and Mecklenburgs already. What do you think?

ParticipantThanks so much for your response. I’d love a tour of the empire, exploring the more solidified states, territories and families of the HRE would be great as they seemed to be fairly changeable over the previous centuries, but now have settled down into the main areas we seem to recognise today.
But you go with your gut, I don’t want to stifle any creativity on your end. If there’s a convenient segue into another topic then I’m happy to follow along.

ParticipantTricky question because there is no good answer. I have found the Hussite episodes fascinating. However I think a move on to the rise of the Hapsburgs and the reform of the Empire during the 15th century would be helpful at this stage. 1500 is the eve of the Reformation and the reign of Charles V and I think a better reference time for a tour of the regions. It will tell us a good deal about why some regions went with the reform and others did not. It will set the scene for arguably the most important event in German history and one of the most important in the history of Europe.

KeymasterThanks for that. It seems though that the majority wants to do a tour of the empire – and though this is not a democracy, the will of the people still counts for something.
I hope it will still give us a good entry point into the reformation.. -
